🌊 This week, ocean scientists from across the globe gathered in Glasgow for the Ocean Sciences Meeting 2026.
Researchers from many disciplines shared new results, exchanged ideas, and strengthened international collaborations. 13 of our #MPIM ocean scientists took part, presenting their work, contributing to discussions, and engaging with colleagues. Thanks to everyone who connected with us in Glasgow. We look forward to continuing the conversations.👋
#AliceMarzocchi (National Oceanography Centre) added an impressive example of the Labrador Sea (between Greenland and Canada) subpolar gyre mixing collapse obtained by high-resolution ocean-ice-biogeochemistry modeling
Ocean Sciences Meeting starts today with the *Atlantic Ocean* 🌊📈
@rahmstorf presenting on the "Risk of Major Future [Atlantic meridional overturning circulation] AMOC Changes":
1. AMOC has a thermosaline tipping point, but also a wind-driven one (?)
2. Subpolar gyre might collapse
3. Many different parameters show slowing of AMOC, density changes, deep water formation
4. Underlined by paleoclimatological studies
5. Breakdown of convection might happen already quite early (next decades?)

The first EPA-permitted ocean alkalinity enhancement field trial — and results are being presented TODAY at #OSM26 in Glasgow. 🌊
WHOI's LOC-NESS project tested adding alkalinity to seawater in the Gulf of Maine to lock CO₂ in the ocean.
If the science checks out, OAE could be a massive CDR pathway. Transparency and community engagement are key.
The first open-water trial of ocean alkalinity enhancement is underway! 🌊
WHOI's LOC-NESS project is testing how adding alkalinity to seawater can lock away CO₂ — while also fighting ocean acidification.
Ocean-based CDR avoids the land-use conflicts we just saw in the Nature Climate Change study. Rigorous field science before commercial scale = the right approach.
