First highlight of the Ocean Sciences Meeting #OSM26
"Sailing Through the Perfect Storm: a Rare CO2 Source in the North Atlantic" by Léa Olivier 🐬⛵🌊
Measuring CO2 fluxes on a racing sailing boat in the North Atlantic shows outgassing of CO2 due to strong storm-induced mixing.

For example, severe funding cuts of National Science Foundation #NSF #Geoscience grants due to lacking staff to administer.

#BrandonJones: "Fighting forward, not fighting back."
#MikeSieracki: "Hopeful pessimism"
#SabrinaSpeich: "Say things as they are: impacts are global!"
#MargaretLeinen: Instead of the federal government, the community itself is coming up with structures and managing processes in research. "Look how much support you have generated, support from your fellow citizens!"

*Direct actions in science communities?*

Brandon Jones: Hear global voices, partner with professional societies globally!

Margaret Leinen: "Fighting back for reinstating #DEI [diversity, equity and inclusion] grants... you have agency, don't forget that!"
"Early career ocean professionals #ecop are building our future!"

Mike Sieracki: "We expect to have a democracy after the apocalypse." Have a #chaos meeting with your colleagues, share what crazy stuff is happening

_"A Sea of Learning: Sharing Stories of Ocean Engagement"_

*Ocean literacy matters!*
Edem Mahu (University of Ghana) presented the Future Ocean Leaders Academy #FOLA

Ocean Sciences Meeting starts today with the *Atlantic Ocean* 🌊📈

@rahmstorf presenting on the "Risk of Major Future [Atlantic meridional overturning circulation] AMOC Changes":

1. AMOC has a thermosaline tipping point, but also a wind-driven one (?)
2. Subpolar gyre might collapse
3. Many different parameters show slowing of AMOC, density changes, deep water formation
4. Underlined by paleoclimatological studies
5. Breakdown of convection might happen already quite early (next decades?)

#AliceMarzocchi (National Oceanography Centre) added an impressive example of the Labrador Sea (between Greenland and Canada) subpolar gyre mixing collapse obtained by high-resolution ocean-ice-biogeochemistry modeling

So many different shapes of Marine Snow in the ocean! 🌊☃️☄️

#LarsStemmann (Laboratoire d'Océanographie de Villefranche) presenting the clustering of particle types by UVP, their depth distributions, and flux down in the water column.
Turns out: Dark and agglomerated particles sink fastest! ☄️
