Insidious forms of schizophrenia are the worst because relapse isn’t marked by a major psychotic episode. Instead, people gradually lose insight and slip into psychosis unnoticed. In occult spaces, this is problematic, as schizoid symptoms are normalized.
Even if a person with schizophrenia is on meds, stressors or drug use (e.g., cannabis, stimulants) can overwhelm treatment. Health changes (like endocrinological issues) affect how antipsychotics are absorbed or metabolized. Just because someone with schizophrenia is on meds doesn’t mean they won’t relapse.
Endocrine disorders like thyroid dysfunction can affect liver enzyme activity. The liver metabolizes antipsychotics through enzymes like CYP450. I take antipsychotics and need liver blood work done because a side effect is liver damage. If the liver is affected by hormonal imbalances from thyroid issues, the enzyme CYP450 won’t function properly, altering antipsychotic efficacy.
People with schizophrenia who have thyroid issues have a higher chance of relapse, even if medicated. I’m thinking of one in particular. The really sad thing about that particular case is that chaos magick communities are so toxic that no one sees when their members are in crisis. It’s actually very isolating. The deeper people get into occultism, the more they alienate themselves.
