New York City powers the state economy, growing 110% from 2010 to 2024 while the rest of New York grew 68%. Yet NYC taxpayers generate 54.5% of state revenue but receive only 40.5% back. In FY 2022, the city sent $68.8 billion to Albany and got $47.6 billion back, a $21.2 billion gap while NYC faces a $5.4 billion budget shortfall. #NewYorkCity #NYPolitics #Budget

The New York Post reported on what it believes are the five front-runners to be the next New York City schools chancellor. The article leads with the most well-known name of the bunch, Jamal Bowman, whose accomplishments include running a New York City school without a license and, while in Congress, pulling a fire alarm to delay a vote. While I have little hope for the present or future of New York City public schools, I will submit for the record that I would be surprised to see a Chancellor Bowman. I will explain my prediction nicely by noting that I am reasonably confident he did not understand that he would be on camera when he pulled the fire alarm in Congress.

[Note] Chancellor Bowman?

I express my doubts that Jamal Bowman will be the new New York City schools chancellor, cryptically citing to his rationale to pull a fire alarm while in Congress.

According to Joseph Burns writing for City Journal, “while the final tallies [in the 2025 NYC Mayoral election] identified Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa as the losers, the name of the real loser didn’t even appear on the ballot: Governor Kathy Hochul.” While Ms. Hochul is likely less than enthusiastic about running for re-election next year with the brave new New York City looming over her shoulder, I dare say Mr. Cuomo, who has his own axe to grind with her, probably had a worse election night. But what struck me is that you have to be in a bit of a pundit bubble to identify as the real loser of the New York City mayoral election… the Governor? You especially have to be in a bubble when, regardless of the electoral liabilities tied to the new Mayor outside of the transplant hipster demographic in New York City, said Governor is still favored to win a second full term next November.

[Note] The “Real” Loser of NYC’s Mayor Race?

I question the assessment in a City Journal opinion peace that the “real loser” of the 2025 NYC Mayoral election is NY Governor Kathy Hochul.

https://social.emucafe.org/naferrell/times-of-londons-fake-de-blasio-quote-10-29-25/

The Times of London found itself in an awkward journalistic situation when it printed an article featuring fictitious quotes by former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. Time Times of London explained the error as follows, according to the New York Post:

The Times has apologized to Bill de Blasio and removed the article immediately after discovering that our reporter had been misled by an individual falsely claiming to be the former New York mayor.

I had two thoughts worth sharing about this absurd story.

  • Why is The Times of London conducting interviews with a former Mayor of New York City? London is a long way away from New York City. I have seen little evidence that a significant number of people in New York City care much about what Mr. de Blasio thinks these days. I cannot imagine that the largely international readership of ToL is more interested in his insights. A non-insignificant number of supporters of his preferred candidate for Mayor may not even remember who he is, notwithstanding the fact that he left office in January 2022. Lest anyone doubt be, remember I have lived through hearing a classmate confuse the 2005 New York City Mayoral Election with a Presidential race.
  • This story presents a cautionary tale. One reason The Times of London was so easily duped by an imposter (assuming they are telling the truth and did not interview ChatGPT) may well be because they lack the sorts of ties that would be helpful in reporting on U.S. municipal politics. I am often less than impressed with foreign media assessments of U.S. politics and I have no doubt that foreigners would find much to be nonplussed by in U.S. coverage of their local political affairs.
  • But in the end the solution was simple in this case: Ask whether you need to conduct this particular “interview” at all.

    [Note] Times of London’s Fake de Blasio Quote

    The Times of London was fooled by a Bill de Blasio imposter. I ask why Times of London was trying to interview former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.

    @mattotcha

    Are we surprised? That the mob boss would turn to racist attacks to keep control? Not in the slightest.

    Honestly, I hope Mamdani has excellent physical security. Cuomo is a less-than-nice person.
