Lorsque Blanche comparaît devant le tribunal de Farleigh, petite ville du Sud des États-Unis, pour quelques malheureux chèques en bois, elle n’en mène pas large. Car Blanche ne connaît que trop bien la partialité révoltante des cours de justice de son pays. Puisqu’elle est une femme noire qui, pour gagner sa vie, fait des ménages, elle ne doute pas qu’elle se retrouvera bientôt derrière les barreaux. Blanche décide donc de décamper et de se mettre au vert dans la maison de campagne de ses nouveaux employeurs, de riches notables qui semblent avoir beaucoup plus de choses à cacher que leur domestique en cavale… Sauf que Blanche compte bien ne pas les laisser laver leur linge sale en famille. Et si elle ne ressemble en rien au détective habituel des romans policiers, elle a tout du plus fin limier : un sens de l’observation sans pareil et un instinct infaillible – des qualités qui reflètent peut-être surtout une compréhension aiguë du monde et de ses inégalités.
