L’Emmerdeur d’Édouard Molinaro

Que se passe-t-il lorsqu’on est trop gentil avec les autres, ou qu’on se soumet aux conventions sociales qui exigent qu’on aide les autres ? Une catastrophe. C’est ce qui arrive à un honnête tueur à gage, Ralf Milan (Lino Ventura), chargé d’exécuter un témoin gênant, Louis Randoni (Xavier Depraz), depuis la fenêtre de sa chambre d’hôtel devant le palais de justice de Montpellier.

Milan est un pro, il prépare minutieusement son affaire. Mais voilà une inondation ! C’est le minable occupant de la chambre voisine qui cherche à se pendre à la tuyauterie de la salle de bain. François Pignon (Jacques Brel) est un représentant en chemises que sa femme (Caroline Cellier) cocufie avec son psy, le docteur Fuchs (Jean-Pierre Darras). Pignon a tout de l’émotionnel non maîtrisé, l’opposé du froid et rationnel Milan. Un contraste propice aux étincelles, et à une bonne histoire.

Le tueur professionnel paye le garçon d’étage (Nino Castelnuovo) pour qu’il mette un couvercle sur cette « malheureuse » tentative de suicide de Français moyen. Il persuade Pignon qu’il va s’occuper de lui. Il s’est lui-même lié les mains, délaissant a mission pour jouer au Bon Samaritain. Pignon le colle comme le sparadrap du capitaine Haddock, jusqu’à la case prison, où les deux se retrouvent, l’un continuant d’emmerder l’autre jusqu’au trognon. On comprend pourquoi sa femme l’a quitté…

Un emmerdeur est quelqu’un qui gêne, qui vous casse les pieds (ou les couilles, selon votre sexe), qui vous gâche l’existence, comme une merde dans laquelle vous marchez et qui vous colle aux semelles. Dès lors, l’empathie, l’entraide humaine, la charité, sont mises à rude épreuve. La seule façon de ne plus être emmerdé est de confier l’emmerdeur à un autre, ou de le planter là. Milan ne le fait pas, poussé par le socialement correct d’époque (la génération née vers 1950), et un reste de morale catholique. Dommage pour lui – il est parfois des moments où il faut rompre avec les conventions.

L’histoire est bien menée, issue du théâtre où tout doit s’enchaîner (la pièce Le Contrat de Francis Veber en 1971). Le duo contrasté des acteurs garde l’attention. Tout au plus ressent-on dans la durée une certaine lassitude de voir toujours Milan le pro céder à Pignon le loser, au lieu de le confier au garçon d’étage, aux pompiers, aux flics. A se disperser ainsi, on rate sa mission.
