“Inferno”

Nothing showcases the incredible power of our atmosphere like storms, and no one does stormchase photography like Mike Olbinski. In this vignette, he shows a stunning line of supercells caught near sunset on July 17, 2022. The high shear–combined with the setting sun–put on an incredible show. Dust blown up in a haboob, microbursts and downpours in the distance, and lots of churning, roiling turbulence. (Video and image credit: M. Olbinski)

Out of it for a bit - too busy for any social media punctuated by a #microburst #tornado event Friday evening. 5 minutes 8/10” rainfall serious tree damage. One of our big oaks fell west to east uphill onto a power line , which held enough to snap 2 poles. "A perda de uma #árvoregigante causa imensos estragos ao meio ambiente. Por serem centenárias, muitas têm entre 200 e 300 anos, elas estocam uma grande quantidade de carbono. Com a sua morte, esse carbono é lançado de volta à atmosfera, desequilibrando a conta de captura versus emissões de carbono. Apesar de representarem apenas 1% das árvores do ecossistema amazônico, essas gigantes são responsáveis por 50% do estoque e fluxo desse gás."

Microburst (Storm 🌪️)

In meteorology, a downburst is a strong downward and outward gushing wind system that emanates from a point source above and blows radially, that is, in straight lines in all directions from the area of impact at surface level. It originates under deep, moist convective conditions like Cumulus congestus or Cumulonimbus. Capable of producing damaging winds, it may sometimes be confused with a tornado, wh...

Downburst - Wikipedia

Today's #weather words (there's two today!): #macroburst and #microburst. Both describe a downburst, a sudden violent downdraft within a thunderstorm typically associated with strong winds and torrential rain. The more common is the microburst, which is less than 2.5 miles in diameter and lasts less than five minutes. However, macrobursts are the microburst's larger cousin and can produce tornado-like damage in the most significant events.
