A powerful microburst struck Tempe, Arizona, around 13:00 LT (20:00 UTC) on October 13, 2025, as severe thunderstorms swept across the Phoenix metropolitan area. The event produced wind gusts up to 145 km/h (90 mph), uprooted trees, and damaged hundreds of structures. Both describe a downburst, a sudden violent downdraft within a thunderstorm typically associated with strong winds and torrential rain. The more common is the microburst, which is less than 2.5 miles in diameter and lasts less than five minutes. However, macrobursts are the microburst's larger cousin and can produce tornado-like damage in the most significant events.

Storms like this always result in me getting basically zero sleep. Since the #LFK #microburst in 2017, I have developed severe storm-related PTSD. It’s making me question “ownership” (more than I already do generally!!).

I consider what I’m doing stewardship, because I’m returning so many food plants and native plants to this tiny plot. But the damage that storms have done seems to outweigh the small changes I am trying to make.
