Today I learned Pavilion Lake north of Whistler and Lillooet has #microbialites creating a #boundstone reef in fresh water!

Joffre Lakes trail on the way there is permitted and full, so I'm planning to approach the peak from the next trail east along Duffey Lake road hwy 99.

Excited to get into new territory today on the way east from the Fraser into the Columbia river watersheds.

Newly identified #nematodes from the #GreatSaltLake are associated with #microbialites and specially adapted to #hypersaline conditions: Julie Jung et al. https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rspb.2023.2653

"they discovered thousands of tiny #worms in the lake's microbialites, those reef-like structures that cover about a fifth of the lakebed."
