The scandal of sexual abuse in Paris nurseries that shook France.
AGI - An animator from a school in the 11th arrondissement of Paris will appear before the Criminal Court tomorrow on charges of sexually abusing children from the nursery school. The proceedings, which the plaintiffs chose not to hold behind closed doors, represent the first public trial since the abuse scandal in after-school programs exploded in the capital, becoming a central theme in the political and social debate. The #MeTooEcole collective has announced a demonstration outside the courthouse.
Previous Trial and Context of the Crisis
At the beginning of May, another trial took place in the same court involving a youth worker active in the same arrondissement, one of the epicenters of the crisis. In that case, the hearing was held behind closed doors and the Prosecutor requested 18 months with a suspended sentence. The verdict is expected for June 16th.
In tomorrowâs proceedings, the defendant is David G., 36 years old, accused by the Prosecutor of sexually abusing five children and harassing two female activity leaders. The alleged incidents date back to between the start of the 2024 school year and April 2025.
These accusations are supplemented by four direct complaints filed by other families, who claim that the man also abused their children. The direct complaint procedure allows an accused to appear in court without going through the Prosecutor.
Reporting by the Director and Immediate Suspension
The case emerged in April 2025, when the director of the Alphonse-Baudin nursery school reported concerns expressed by parents of two girls, who had noticed a sudden isolation of their daughter and abnormal behavior attributed to the activities coordinator.
The City of Paris immediately suspended the operator, who has never been reinstated, as confirmed by the mayorâs office.
Testimonies of Children and Investigative Difficulties
The Child Protection Unit collected testimonies from very young children who, in their own words, reported being touched in their private parts. Many parents told the police about sudden changes in their childrenâs behavior: crying before school, regressions in the use of the potty, anxiety without apparent causes.
However, no school staff member has stated that they witnessed the abuse directly, highlighting the evidentiary complexity of cases based on the testimony of very young, sometimes contradictory or difficult-to-interpret children.
The lawyers for the plaintiffs, Hannah Kopp and Rebecca Royer, stated: "When nine children who don't know each other describe the same actions, the same man, and the same places, we have no choice but to believe them. Three-to-five-year-olds cannot invent scenes of sexual violence of this type."
The Defense and Risks of Conviction
Arrested in June, David G. denied all the accusations. A freelance journalist, he worked in after-school programs to supplement his income. He only admitted to violating some rules of the code of conduct for animators, such as holding a child in his arms.
An unconvicted offender, he risks up to ten years in prison and a fine of âŹ150,000. His lawyer has not responded to requests for comment from AFP.
A Widespread Phenomenon: 84 Daycare Centers Under Investigation
According to the Paris Prosecutorâs Office, investigations are currently open into possible cases of violence in 84 daycare centers, approximately 20 elementary schools, and a dozen nurseries. Three other trials involving sexual violence related to extracurricular programs are expected before the beginning of September, signaling a systemic crisis that continues to shake the capital.
