I've had a little process running for the past year or so, totting up Mastodon "active monthly users". Occasional bumps up (one outstanding one last summer when Elon did something particularly idiotic) followed by long slow declines.

Was somewhat disappointed to see recent growth of about 250k turning out to be a phantom instance (telling lies via the API).

I knew that #Mastodon is big in #Japan but mstdn.jp activity figures are wild.

Since November it's stable around 400k registered users, most of which go inactive for months at a time. But in the past 4 days, 200k of them returned active. That would account for half of the increase in MAU as measured by @fediverse.

Is this just the effect of word of mouth off-fediverse?

So I am building an #iOS app called #MastoStats to show your Mastodon Stats as a widget on the today screen. I have most of the UI done, and I am now working on connecting it to Mastodon. This is really exciting.

@fediverse The #fediverse MAU figures are quite constant these days. This suggests the retention of users who joined 1 month ago was better than with some previous waves. Or we have an exact substitution by new registrations in the past month. Any ideas which, @hildabast?

Some more #mastostats... as you can see the begin of week 46 was the most busy on this server according to CPU usage. Up to 9 CPU cores were used (cpu-month.png).
When looking at cpu-year.png you can see the total increase of post-Musk #fediverse and another thing: in April the new server with NVMe and SSDs has been brought online. The dark blue color on the upper limit is the disk IO wait of the old HDD based server.
