Happy birthday to self-taught trail-blazing Irish #marineBiologist Maude Delap (1866 – 1953), 1st to successfully breed jellyfish in captivity & document their full lifecycle. She is surrounded by blue #jellyfish (Cyanea lamarckii) life stages based on her diagrams.

Born 7th of 10 kids to Rev Alexander & Anna Jane Delap in County Donegal, her family to Valentia Island when she was 8. 🧵1/

Conical spider crab, Sogod Bay #Philippines

I'm not 100% sure about the crab species, but this was the closest match in my book. It presumably has 8 legs, although only seven are clearly visible.

Maybe some #MarineBiologist has a more informed guess, but the small black dots or spheres look a bit like eggs to me, particularly around the base of the torso.

#MarineBiologist for a day: #shark tagging
"#Science in general does not have a great reputation of being welcoming and supportive and inclusive and kind," said #DavidShiffman "Field science is perhaps more of a problem than that. And field science involving what are called charismatic #megafauna... is perhaps worse than that. It's probably because a lot of people want to do this, which means if we treat someone poorly and they quit", it won't take long to fill the spot.
