I totally understand the feeling. I also joined to help address #marginsci

Some folks are afraid to do this because they want it to immediately be big expensive conferences at luxury locations, big publications...

You can't get there without being willing to start. You *build* it. But you have to have the audacity to believe something better is possible. #DisabledAndSTEM #MarginSci

I have yet to have interactions with professional societies that aren't ableist.

I think it's past time for marginalized scientists to start their own professional societies instead of trying to reform the status quo societies. Just build it right from the alpha.

I've never seen a good faith effort from professional societies. It's all about getting brownie points for looking diverse without doing one bit of the work required to actually be inclusive and supportive. #DisabledAndSTEM #MarginSci

The White House Office of Science & Technology Policy is having a number of listening sessions on Open Science June 5, 6, and 12. Good opportunity for marginalized scientists to weigh in.

Just got an email poll asking if I were going to attend ASPB Plant Biology 2023. I voted no, said "other" for my reason, and wrote in that having conferences without equitable accessible online options communicates who ASPB thinks belongs in plant science. And I don't like what they're communicating with that. Ditto holding it in-person during a pandemic, in states that are cranking up persecution.

I encourage y'all who got the email to respond. #DisabledInSTEM #MarginSci

By this I mean creating space, using the resources one has or can acquire, to build something NOW instead of saying "that's just the way things are" "they're too big for us to fight", etc? #AcademicChatter #DisabledInSTEM #BlackInX #MarginSci
Given the way academic publishing and large professional societies are acting, is there any punk DIY movement within academia to create academic venues that are more accessible and actively working against systemic oppressions? #AcademicChatter #DisabledInSTEM #BlackInX #MarginSci

Hi I'm Isabel! I'm a scientist who studies infectious diseases in animals.

I do #SciComm when I can, write in #disabilitychat, discuss being #queerinsci and #marginsci, and I run a local #Indivisible group in my free time.

My handle comes from the way a barista spelled my name on a coffee order. I still wonder how I said it.
