We have ported Nik4, the Python utility to render map images using #Mapnik by @zverik, to C++ and called it Nik5. #OpenStreetMap

Work-in-Progress: map5topo Vector Tiles (right, #Martin+#MapLibre) growing towards existing raster tiles (left, #MapProxy +#Mapnik).
Using common PostGIS map5-data schema.
#MapLIbre styling thanks to @bniene .

I am hacking carto stylesheets and postgres magics to make pretty useful maps...

And I've had an afternoon coffee... Yum.

This may all work out, or may fall apart at the last moment into a pile of snotters and pee. Hmm.

@vwbusguy From elevation data I derive four datasets: slope angle, elevation based colors, contour lines and hill shades. The latter could be made with #Blender, and it looks awesome, but its _really_ expensive and I haven't managed to fully automate it, so I use a tool called #GDAL like everybody else. Besides that, I use almost the same stack as #OpenStreetMap: #carto-css for styling, #mapnik for rendering, and my own set of tools for orchestrating and serving that.

#OpenStreetMap #InTheWild

While reviewing plans for a hiking trip, this agency's website described a feature map as "Google Map".

Clicking on the label takes you to GMaps, but the embedded map itself, which you can browse freely, is obviously made with @OpenStreeetMap, specifically the #Mapnik layer.

OK, so #mapnik is not the best right now for me. What other #OpenStreetMap to #raster tiles are there? Specially if it has a text based style language. I could even try to write a compiler from osm-carto to that.

Still on the hunt for this #OpenRailwayMap rendering "bug". I used the overpass python API (so cool!) to diff features and attributes and I'm coming up empty. The eastmost bridge has "bridge=viaduct" so one of my earlier hypothesis about "bridge=yes" is out the window.
It could be a #Mapnik bug... To anyone from the #OpenStreetMap community: help 😅
