In 1769, James Cook stole a sacred object belonging to the Maori community of Te Aitanga-a-Hauiti in New Zealand. Now, this sacred object is being publicly displayed in Germany with much self-praise. A decision on its return is still a long way off.

A scandal! Yes, indeed!

Especially when we compare it to the hysterical reports about the theft of jewels from the Louvre in France.

Colonial loot must be returned immediately!

Since I know nothing about Maori mythology, I looked up Papatunuku and learned that

1. Her mate is Ranginui, not Maui;
2. Maui is a trickster god.

So was it deliberate manipulation on Jerome's part to bag Papatunuku, or did the scriptwriters just fail? I mean, at one point, Jerome invokes the blessings of Ranginui so clearly they're aware of him.

Also, Mike is Ullr, god of skill, hunt, and duel. Why was he afraid of Natalie? Do his powers desert him when the hunter becomes the hunted? That feels like a definite oversight on the part of the writers.

In Māori mythology, the demigod Maui transformed his brother-in-law Irawaru into the first dog. Different versions of the tale give varying reasons for why Maui did this, ranging from being jealous of Irawaru’s fishing skills to being annoyed by his gluttony. #MythologyMonday

In the version of Maui's story told by New Zealand's Māori people, the demigod was born premature, so his parents cast him into the sea. However, Maui survived and was discovered by his grandfather, the god of the seas, who cared for and protected him as he grew up. #FolkyFriday

Happy #EarthDay! The hākuturi are birdlike guardians of the forest from Māori mythology. When Rātā cut down a sacred tree to build a canoe without performing the appropriate rites, the hākuturi not only re-erected the tree but put all of its discarded wood chips back in place. #MythologyMonday

The Hākuturi are birdlike guardians of the forest from Māori mythology. In one story, they re-erected a sacred tree that Rātā had cut down to build a canoe because he failed to perform the appropriate rites, even going so far as to put every wood chip back into its proper place. #FaustianFriday
