I've been waiting/asking for this for years, but #Akamai #Linode finally now has the ability to create VMs without a root password and with ssh root password logins disabled by default!

So I looked for #VPS solutions that don't charge for bandwidth overage or have a large enough bandwidth cap.

Tried #Hetzner -- denied account :(
Considered #Linode -- feels a little expensive compared to others
Considered #OVHCloud -- wanted a lighter, less expensive VM than their starter

Was down to #Netcup (often mentioned in Reddit) VPS nano G11s and #BuyVM SLICE 1024.

Prioritized RAM (2x of BuyVM + 3x storage) so got Netcup despite 6mo lock-in.

Account approved, server set up!

Little $5/mo linode seems happy enough hosting a tiny gotosocial instance. First half day or so of operation (graphs) and top from after a reboot (resizing the swap partition from 512MB to 2048MB just in case).

This covered initial gotosocial+nginx server setup, account creation, following ~500 accounts, and restoring ~1300 posts backed up from my account on chaos.social.

Taken with #Wireshark in Windows 11 on the Ethernet (to Verizon Home 5G Modem) then transferred to the FTP server from where the SCYTHE consumed it with a clean polite ingress.
