Libby (in Brattleboro, she really didn't need a last name) was a fixture around town. I used to see her here in the late 1980s and she was a resident of Brattleboro by 1990. From talking with a lot of people since she died in December 2025, it appears folks knew her by sight because she walked around town a lot or they didn't notice her at all because her frequent presence made her part of the community's ambience, with very little in between. A few local people knew of her acting career. Nearly everyone here didn't.

I have posted a good deal of information about Libby at the genealogy website, FamilySearch.org, and this article pulls many details together very nicely.

Libby was something like a Brattleboro institution and it is hard to imagine the town without her.

A fund for Libby Howes has been set up via Go Fund Me. Libby, as you may know, is a fixture in Brattleboro. Her house on South Main Street burned down one Sunday night a few weeks ago. The amount being sought here is modest and, in fact, I think too modest. A fund at a local bank and publicity by way of local news outlets would have raised a lot more money, in my opinion. Be that as it may, what we have is a GoFundMe.com fundraiser; and if you have money to donate to this very worthy cause, the following link will get you to an opportunity to do it.

I passed Libby on Canal Street two or three days ago. She looked happy and healthy. We would do well to help her remain happy and healthy.

[I have been told of negative hearsay about the "reporter" in this case. Don't know, either way, whether any of it is at all true. Notice, though, some unsympathetic comments about the reporter rather than the crime.]

The scene of the crime is next door to Libby Howes's house which lately burned down.

I reported to family about a week ago hearing an explosion from somewhere around the (former?) drug house diagonally across Canal Street from here.  The day before yesterday, while walking on South Main Street, I heard another three explosions.

The Brattleboro Reformer said a GoFundMe account was being set up for Libby Howes, whose house burned Sunday night a week ago. Yet a Web search and a search of the GoFundMe site just now turned up no fund of any sort to help Libby. I should think a fund for her at a local bank, such as Brattleboro Savings and Loan, would make most sense. Does anyone know what, if anything, is being done?
