When it comes to standing up to Donald Trump and his attacks against our nation, the lack of effort on Capitol Hill is shocking.

Does anyone here have a view to share about local news coverage?

A fellow I know complains about numerous instances of hearing emergency vehicles without any following Brattleboro Reformer coverage of any of the events.

I have been concentrating very heavily on national and world news so there is not a lot I can add. But.....

One of my former neighbors is in court on criminal charges. Beyond a court post of date and time of a status hearing, there seems to be no coverage of the crime or charges. WTSA morning radio news is generally the same as the prior evening's news. On Wednesday of last week, the WTSA morning news was the same as the prior MONDAY's evening news. WTSA's once incomparable weather service has been replaced with something so bad that I'm switching to AccuWeather online. [There are exceptions. This morning, WCAX's Gunnar Consol did quite well. New kid on the block, he was hired last month.]

Anyway, it wouldn't seem right to ask without offering my own experiences; but I am mainly interested in what you think.

The Brattleboro Reformer said a GoFundMe account was being set up for Libby Howes, whose house burned Sunday night a week ago. Yet a Web search and a search of the GoFundMe site just now turned up no fund of any sort to help Libby. I should think a fund for her at a local bank, such as Brattleboro Savings and Loan, would make most sense. Does anyone know what, if anything, is being done?

The Do-Nothing Congress can't do much of anything else, either, though the Trump Party is determined to impeach Hunter Biden, without regard to whether he holds a federal office. Donald Trump's Assistant Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, will see to it.

Democracy is dead in America

[This Letter to the Editor, by Jacki Brown, is in today's Brattleboro Reformer, Wednesday, January 31, 2024. It makes some good points and it seems to me it is worth circulating further. I actually don't know whether there is a copyright issue with letters column pieces.]

To the Editor: Democracy is dead in America when a smart, articulate, unifying Congressman - Dean Phillips - spends more than two months campaigning in New Hampshire for the Democratic Presidential Primary and gets nearly zero media coverage.

Democracy is dead in America when a sitting president is a no-show in New Hampshire because he fears being challenged by someone more fit for office than himself.

Democracy is dead in America when the National Democratic Party and state democratic parties keep Phillips off the ballot and call Biden the winner. Democracy is dead when Biden says it is "clear that Donald Trump will be the Republican nominee." Probable, yes, but who is Biden to declare winners before Americans vote?

Democracy is dead when a majority of Republicans support an incoherent, racist, sexually abusive man who refused the peaceful transfer of power in the last election and will make pardoning himself one of his first acts if he indeed wins the coming election. Democracy is dead when autocratic Trump speaks to his followers through limited communication channels, inciting them with false threats that people and institutions are out to get them and that he is the only one who can save them.

Democracy is dead in America when special interest money controls politicians' positions, what we hear, and who we can vote for to lead our nation.

Democracy is dead when our citizens are too tired, too discouraged, too zoned-out, too disenfranchised, too preoccupied with the Kardashians or porn or Netflix to engage in civil discourse or stand up for what they believe is important and just.

Democracy is dead in America. We can only hope that there is life after death.

So sorry to see this in Bob Fagelson's Letter to the Editor in Thursday's Brattleboro Reformer.

"I wonder why Booie, the nicest, kindest person I have ever known, was cursed with a disease that is destroying her mind."

Booie Fagelson has been very well known to, and very well liked by, patients, such as myself, of Vermont ENT Associates, Drs. Bob and David Fagelson.

Incidental to this ..... I haven't seen David Fagelson in a very long time but an online search on his name turned up a pretty good photo of him that was used on his LinkedIn page.

PUTNEY PAPER IS CLOSING

The Brattleboro Reformer has an article about the planned closing of Putney Paper.

Those who do not have a Reformer subscription can still read articles by way of the Brooks Memorial Library subscription. It is necessary, first, to have a library card, which is a good thing to have anyway.

I just went paperless with my Green Mountain Power account. It is my hope that this is not the straw that broke the camel's back for Putney Paper.
