Yesterday (Friday) Brattleboro Police yellow tape ran all along the Elm Street entryways to the homeless camp by the Whetstone Stream. I saw no police activity or human activity of any sort. A news search just now turned up nothing about it.

Brattleboro news has been hard to come by lately. Social media helps but I saw nothing about this incident at Facebook either.

[An older news story that I just received in my email this morning]

[I have been told of negative hearsay about the "reporter" in this case. Don't know, either way, whether any of it is at all true. Notice, though, some unsympathetic comments about the reporter rather than the crime.]

The scene of the crime is next door to Libby Howes's house which lately burned down.

I reported to family about a week ago hearing an explosion from somewhere around the (former?) drug house diagonally across Canal Street from here.  The day before yesterday, while walking on South Main Street, I heard another three explosions.

This City Has Been Named the Most Dangerous City to Live in Vermont

Vermont takes pride in its natural splendor, maple syrup, and ski resorts, yet the Green Mountain State is not without its challenges. Several cities within it grapple with elevated crime rates, posing safety concerns for both residents and visitors.

This article aims to uncover the most hazardous city to reside in within Vermont, utilizing the most recent FBI crime data. Additionally, it will delve into potential reasons behind the crime issue and propose solutions.

About Brattleboro

Vermont is renowned for its natural splendor, maple syrup, and ski resorts, but it harbors cities with safety concerns as well. According to the latest FBI crime data, Brattleboro emerges as the most perilous city in Vermont, situated in the southeast corner with a population of around 12,000.

Brattleboro claims the highest overall crime rate in the state, presenting residents with a 1 in 16 likelihood of falling victim to either violent or property-related offenses.

The town notably exhibits the state’s highest property crime rate, recording 6,094 incidents per 100,000 people. This figure is nearly 70% above the national average and more than double the state average.

The violent crime rate in Brattleboro is also noteworthy, with 489 incidents per 100,000 people, approximately 50% higher than the national average and nearly four times the state average. In 2022, the town reported one murder, 13 rapes, 28 robberies, and 32 aggravated assaults.

While the precise reasons for Brattleboro’s elevated crime rate remain unclear, potential contributing factors include poverty, drug abuse, mental health issues, and inadequate police resources. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Brattleboro exhibits a poverty rate of 16.5%, surpassing the state average of 10.2%.

Additionally, the town faces a significant rate of opioid overdose deaths, totaling 18 fatalities in 2022. Notably, the Brattleboro Police Department operates with 27 sworn officers, falling below the recommended ratio of 1.8 officers per 1,000 residents.

Brattleboro isn’t the sole city in Vermont facing safety challenges. Other notable locations, including St. Albans, Rutland, Winooski, and Burlington, exhibit elevated rates of both violent and property crimes, surpassing state and national averages. Additionally, some of these cities have witnessed a concerning uptick in criminal activity over the years.

Despite these concerns, Vermont maintains its status as one of the safest states in the nation, ranking 48th out of 50 in overall crime rates. Factors contributing to this include a sparse population, a strong community spirit, and a low incidence of gun violence.

Notably, Vermont is also home to some of the safest cities in the country, such as Barre Town, Shelburne, and Colchester. While Vermont is renowned for its natural beauty and tranquility, acknowledging and addressing areas requiring attention and improvement is crucial.

By tackling root causes like poverty, addiction, and mental health issues, the state can enhance safety and livability in its cities for all residents.

Attempts by Officials to Lower Crime in Vermont

Efforts to decrease crime in Vermont include:

1. Boosting police presence in high-crime areas.
2. Implementing diverse strategies to address crime issues, including tackling poverty, addiction, and mental health concerns.
3. Intensifying patrols and the visibility of authorities to discourage potential criminals and promptly respond to reported incidents.
4. Offering crime prevention tips and resources to residents through the Vermont State Police website.
5. Allowing residents to sign up for notifications when a sex offender relocates to their town.

These measures reflect the commitment of officials to establish a safer environment for Vermont residents.

To Conclude

While Vermont is often admired for its picturesque landscapes and renowned maple syrup, the stark reality of crime persists in some of its cities. Brattleboro stands out as the most perilous, grappling with a high crime rate fueled by a complex interplay of poverty, drug abuse, mental health struggles, and understaffed police forces.

Despite this somber scenario, hope remains. Vermont maintains its reputation as one of the nation’s safest states, with a low overall crime rate and tranquil communities like Barre Town, Shelburne, and Colchester. This duality emphasizes the importance of recognizing and addressing the difficulties experienced by cities such as Brattleboro.

The way forward involves a comprehensive approach. While increasing police presence is essential, it is not sufficient. Simultaneously addressing the root causes—poverty, addiction, and mental health issues—is imperative.

by Daniel Duric
January 15, 2024

BRATTLEBORO — In a series of arrests over the weekend, Brattleboro police apprehended five individuals involved in various disturbances, including domestic disputes and an assault that resulted in a stabbing.

On Jan. 12, officers responded to Groundworks on South Main Street, where Liliana Vandertuin had reportedly become combative with staff after being asked to leave earlier in the day.

Despite police attempts to persuade her to depart, Vandertuin refused and was taken into custody on a $200 bail.

The same day, police were called to a residence on Valley Street for a domestic dispute.

Anthony B. Hewitt was arrested on charges of domestic assault, disorderly conduct, and violating court-ordered conditions of release.

His bail was set at $10,000, with a court appearance scheduled for Jan. 16 at Windham County Superior Court.

On Jan. 13, a reported stabbing at an apartment complex on Canal Street led to the arrest of Michael F. Favreau.

Favreau allegedly assaulted an individual and stabbed them multiple times.

Following a 45-minute standoff, he was detained and held on a $5,000 bail.

He is also due in court on Jan. 16.

Later that day, the Brattleboro Co-Op became the scene of an assault, resulting in the arrest of Amber V. March and a 17-year-old juvenile for simple assault.

The juvenile was cited for a later date at Windham Family Court, while March received a citation to appear at Windham Superior Court on March 26.

The final arrest occurred on Jan. 14 at the Comfort Inn, where Andre D. Couch was charged with strangling and assaulting a female companion.

Couch was held on a $1,000 bail and is expected in court on Jan. 16.

The Brattleboro Police Department reminds the public that all individuals arrested or cited are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Additional arrests are anticipated as the investigation continues.
