Ian RoseI came across this tussock moth caterpillar (Lophocampa spp., I think) today, crunching through the leaf litter. Another reminder to leave leaves where they are if and when you can. There is so much alive in there, even if you don't see it.

There were other visitors today too. Smaller but no less gorgeous.

Jani UusitaloLast Friday was an unusually warm for this time of year, +20 °C. The red admiral was still out, as was the small tortoiseshell.
The highlight for me though was this large yellow underwing, calmly feeding on a tansy, despite strong gusts of wind occasionally bending the flower all over the place.

The small tortoiseshell was today's only #butterfly, and even it was probably contemplating life choices, being out in the cloudy +10 °C weather.
But I did find my second ever Catocala: the blue underwing! (With said underwing tucked away unfortunately.)
Also hanging out on the same wall: the dark/northern marbled carpet.

The peacock always manages to look like I've (badly) photoshopped it into my pictures.
Then again, it's a fair representation of the transcendental way I see #butterflies: they're these magical creatures, who've popped into this dull world right out of fairy tales.

My first Catocala! Identified as Catocala adultera over on iNaturalist. I couldn't find a common name for it in English, but the Finnish name translates roughly to "Eastern underwing".
Not particularly well lit, and the downward tilt (plus gusts of wind) made it difficult to get a good composition, but what an impressive #moth.
