Kraken-like giant #octopuses 100m years ago crunched bones of prey: Study of fossilised beaks shows patterns of wear and suggests some ancient species were up to 19 metres long https://www.theguardian.com/science/2026/apr/23/kraken-like-giant-octopuses-crunched-cretaceous-bones paper: https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.aea6285

"One species, Nanaimoteuthis haggarti, was found to have a beak larger than that of the modern giant #squid, a creature that reaches about 12 metres in length... N. haggarti was between 7 and 19 m in length, which could make it the largest #invertebrate on record."

I was afraid of spiders for many years, but jumping spiders like this one (Phidippus johnsoni) won me over with their charm and curious behaviour. For #EarthDay, it's always worth taking a second look at things we might not have affection for yet.

My linocut shows 2 blue mussel. The blue mussel (Mytilus edulis), or common mussel, is a medium-sized edible marine bivalve mollusc in the family Mytilidae. They are aptly called common mussels and are found on temperate beaches worldwide. Perfect for your favourite malachologist, beach comber, gourmand or shell collector, each 8” x 8” print is hand printed on Japanese paper.

As my mobility has nosedived, I'm spending more time photographing little things in nature, in particular invertebrates. Modern sharpening / denoising software can make up for the fact that my kit isn't really up to the job of photographing 3mm long spiders that won't stand still, despite the lens being one of the best around (E-M1, OM 90mm macro). This is one of the Money Spiders, Microlinyphia pusilla. #Spider #Invertebrate #Nature #Macro #Photography #Arachnid
Another cute little snail, probably part of a group called ambersnails. So tiny.

A very cool find! I spotted this termite (Zootermopsis spp.) the other day with a little springtail (Cheirotoma spp.) riding along its back. Apparently those springtails are known to be phoretic, i.e. hitchhikers, on termites.

You look like you could use an emotional support isopod.

Just created this photo, new species or a range extension, found during a walk in the woods today. Lirceus of some kind or another.
