The English spelling for the Cantonese surname Lee doesn't match the Cantonese sound for the name. In fact, Lay is a more accurate spelling for the surname. For some reason, the Cantonese prefer Gei over Gay. Therefore, they may rename Lee Kum Kee as Lay Gum Gei and not as Lay Gum Gay.
