Laser diode bars typically integrate multiple emitters, resulting in high power densities and stringent thermal management requirements. To achieve efficient heat dissipation and structural stability, solder materials must meet the following criteria:
① High thermal conductivity
② Good wettability
③ Appropriate melting point
④ Compatible coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE)
⑤ Excellent fatigue resistance

A PN junction is the interface formed between a P-type semiconductor and an N-type semiconductor: P-type semiconductor is doped with acceptor impurities, such as boron (B), making holes the majority charge carriers. The N-type semiconductor is doped with donor impurities, such as phosphorus (P), making electrons the majority carriers.

So, my previous post seemed quite benign: shine some light and observe the diffraction angles. Except one of the lasers, the purple one, is 25mW…! The green and the red are both at a much lower power level.

The output power of the purple laser, allows for the next two peaks in the diffraction pattern to be observed, but it comes at a price: you HAVE to wear protective glasses, because the energy in reflections will be enough to cause permanent damage to your eyes..!

And as you can see, there are many reflections..

Lasers are really fun, but the point here is: be careful. You can’t always predict what will happen 🙂☝🏻🚨

Proper protection glasses can be a lot more expensive than the lasers themselves but if you want to play with lasers, this is a place where you don’t want to save the money ☝🏻

Light bends around corners 🙂

Earlier I demonstrated the double slit experiment, proving that light has wave-like properties. Increasing the amount of ‘slits’ drastically, say fx. 1000 per millimeter, creates a ‘diffraction grating’, an important optical instrument which can be used for spectral analysis.

Different wavelengths will bend at different angles, as can be seen here using a red, a green and a purple laser. Shining white light through the filter, creates an absolutely beautiful spectrum ❤️🌈 With a bit of effort, you can angle the light so the spectrum matches the dots from three lasers.

Diffraction gratings like these are cheap, so I’m not ruined from accidentally ordering 20 instead of just two 🤷🏼‍♂️😂

Testing my new laser power meter with another ‘rescue’ from a scrapped CD drive. Scavenging laser diodes leaves a lot of ‘debris’.. 🤷🏼‍♂️😂

It’s an infrared laser so I can’t see it (besides a minor glow of deep red), but my phone camera shows it as an eerie purple tone with the characteristic speckle-pattern.

The power meter? It has an absolutely massive thermopile sensor, no wonder it’s quite heavy 🙂 I don’t know much about it’s absolute accuracy, but I think it’ll be ok for my experimental (hobbyist) use.

The lasediode produces some 50mW power at 100mA current, which isn’t uncommon so be careful when playing with invisible light ☝🏻🚨

Giant CNC Partners With Powerful Laser Diode

[Jeshua Lacock] from 3DTOPO owns a large-format CNC (4'x8′, or 1.2×2.4 m), that he strongly feels is lacking laser-cutting capabilities. The frame is there, and a 150 W CO2 laser tube has been sitting in a box for ages - what else could you need? Sadly, at such a scale, aligning the mirrors is a tough and finicky job - and misalignment can be literally blinding. After reading tales about cutters of such size going out of alignment when someone as much as walked nearby, he dropped the idea - and equipped the CNC head with a high-power laser diode module instead. Having done mirror adjustment on a few CO2 tube-equipped lasers, we can see where he's coming from.

Typically, the laser modules you see bolted onto CNC heads are firmly under three watts, which is usually only enough for engraving. With a module that provides 5 watts of optical power, [Jeshua] can cut cardboard and thin plywood as well he tells us even 10 W optical power modules are available, just that he didn't go for one. We reckon that 20 W effective power diodes are not that far into our future, which is getting very close to the potential of the blue box "40 W but actually 35 W but actually way less" K40 laser cutters we cherish. [Joshua]'s cutter is not breaking speed limits, but it's built on what's already there, and the diode is comparatively inexpensive. Equipped with a small honeycomb surface and what seems to be air assist, it's shown in the video cutting an ornamental piece out of cardboard!

We hackers have been equipping CNCs with laser diodes for a while, but on a way smaller scale and with less powerful diodes - this is definitely a step up! As a hacker, you should have at least some laser cutting options at your disposal, and this overview of CO2 cutters and their availability can get you started. We've also given you detailed breakdowns about different sides of laser cutting, be it the must-have of safety, or the nice-to-have of air assist.

FP Laser vs DFB Laser: The Detailed Comparison

https://www.inphenix.com/en/fp-laser-vs-dfb-laser/

In 1953, the physicist John von Neumann has given the concept of the first or #laserdiode and in 1957 the Japanese engineer Jun-ichi Nishizawa patented the world’s first semiconductor laser. But this laser diode is very power inefficient and practically useless.

Since then research has been done across laser diodes for years and today we have lasers like DFB and #FPLaser which give us efficient results with low power.
