4 days until #LaBefana

Three years ago today I was in #Firenze on my final pre-pandemic trip. Since the #epiphany isn’t a big deal in the United States, I was shocked to see a solemn #medieval parade in one piazza and then firefighters dressed as witches throwing candy while repelling down medieval buildings in the next piazza. Happy epiphany, #italia! I hope you all get more candy than coal. #befana #florence #labefana #threekings #threewisemen

The Untold Truth Of #Christmas #Witches

"The roots of quite a few Christmas traditions are linked to older pagan practices that had been around for centuries by the time Christian monks rolled into town. The figures of Christmas witches like Iceland's #Grýla or Italy's #LaBefana are, in the minds of numerous scholars, linked to the same history, especially considering the female spirits and deities that appear in the old beliefs."

Happy #LaBefana to all who celebrate!

For those who don't know, in Italian folklore La Befana is an old witch who housed the three wise men on their way to baby Jesus. They invited her to join but she was too busy with work. Now, like Santa, she brings gifts to good kids and coal/sticks to bad ones - except she does it on Eiphany Eve. 🧙🏻 🇮🇹 #happyholidays

“According to legend, Befana is an old witch who flies through the night of Jan. 5th on her broom delivering presents to children. And as they lie asleep in their beds, she comes down the chimney and puts gifts and candies in stockings hung by the fireplace. So just as we leave cookies for Santa, in Italy putting out special cakes and cookies out for La Befana is a centuries-old tradition.”
