9) Kurama👺🐯

Mt Kurama was once famed for its cherry trees, though very few remain nowadays.
In Heian times the nobility would make the long trek to see the blossoms, and followers of Jōdo-shū nicknamed it the 'Pure Land North of the Capital' (洛北浄土)🌸

Yuki-jinja (由岐神社) is located at the base of Mt Kurama, beside a zig-zagging path that climbs to the temple above.

Enshrined here are the gods Ōnamuchi (大己貴命) and Sukunahikona (少彦名命), collectively known as 'Yuki Daimyōjin'. Both are considered deities of medicine.

Kurama-dera (鞍馬寺) was likely named 'Saddled Horse Temple' as both key figures in its founding were said to have been led to the holy mountain by a mysterious white horse in their dreams: Gantei (鑑禎) in 770 and later Fujiwara-no-Isendo (藤原伊勢人) in 796.

鞍馬寺。かつて日本に流れ着いたユダヤ難民が住んでいた隠れ里であるとする伝説が残されている。当時の日本人にとって馴染みの無かったその姿が天狗のモデルであるという。無論、あくまでも伝説だが。
