This event will take place in person at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library on the 7th Floor.

John Sayles’ Crucible (Melville House; January 2026) is a complex and vast historical novel about Henry Ford — the Elon Musk of his day, in more ways than one — and his attempt to rule not only an automotive empire but the rambunctious city of Detroit. It is an epic tale ranging from the 1920s through the second World War, featuring violent labor disputes, misbegotten jungle expeditions, a tragic race riot, and the gestapo tactics of Ford’s private army.

[...] Professor Jerry W Carlson teaches film history and comparative literature at The City College and Graduate Center CUNY. Recipient of multiple Emmy Awards, he curates and hosts the series City Cinematheque on CUNY TV.

Lone Star still amazing on a third rewatch.

After #Matewan I decided to keep track with #JohnSayles.

I remember that the box art for #LoneStar when it came out on #VHS made me avoid the movie. It look like any other movie about #Texas cops. But is not. It is both a great film and a commentary on the #USA which might be more relevant now than it was back then.

#ChrisCooper is great in the lead but the whole cast is superb.
