This event will take place in person at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library on the 7th Floor.
John Sayles’ Crucible (Melville House; January 2026) is a complex and vast historical novel about Henry Ford — the Elon Musk of his day, in more ways than one — and his attempt to rule not only an automotive empire but the rambunctious city of Detroit. It is an epic tale ranging from the 1920s through the second World War, featuring violent labor disputes, misbegotten jungle expeditions, a tragic race riot, and the gestapo tactics of Ford’s private army.
[...] Professor Jerry W Carlson teaches film history and comparative literature at The City College and Graduate Center CUNY. Recipient of multiple Emmy Awards, he curates and hosts the series City Cinematheque on CUNY TV.

> JOHN SAYLES: “Roger [Corman] hired more female directors than anybody else. It wasn’t because he was a dyed-in-the-wool feminist. It was just if they had talent and they were cheap, let’s try ’em!”
