LCG looking at Johnston Street for Downtown drainage aid
Johnson Street, a Lafayette headache, may also be a solution to flooding issues in Lafayette’s urban core.
This week, the Boulet administration presented a roughly $12 million project to divert floodwater from Freetown, UL and parts of Downtown into a culvert under Johnston Street.
“The ultimate goal is to not flood structures,” Boulet told a packed crowd at the Downtown library Tuesday night, acknowledging that even if everything were to go perfectly, Downtown roads and yards would still flood. But, she argued, if water were properly diverted, businesses and homes would be better protected.

The drainage project would be part of the larger Johnston Street revitalization program that Boulet has pitched and would involve digging into portions of the road to create drainage space.
The Johnston Street plan would replace several drainage projects proposed by the Guillory administration but paused by Boulet after taking office in 2024.
Jimmy Ricks, also the design engineer on several of the discarded projects, argued the Johnston Street solution is a superior fix. While designs and funding are still tentative, LCG floated a late 2027 start for the project.
