As an addendum, #FFXIV has the same issue... fast travel used as a convenience, but all you end up doing is fast travelling. So the world collapses to just a series of isolated fast travel points and has no sense of scale.

When I were a level 15 Night Elf druid, I remember that famous trek across Wetlands in #WorldOfWarcraft. All to see the fabled #Ironforge... It was maybe a fifteen minute run, but it felt so much more than that. A voyage into the unknown...
