For Day 1 of #InvertFest let me share my #Christmas gift that I got from @thebluemango.in A ladybug pin! #虫

today I learned:

some cicadas have symbiotic gut fungus (yes, fungi, not bacteria) that make amino acides for them. These fungi are related to the infamous "zombie" cordyceps fungi.

some cicadas in N. America have gone extinct in recent times, some without having their songs recorded

Here's looking at you, squid

One last post for #InvertFest and it's four of my favorite friends from this year. It was hard to narrow it down to just that!

On the 31th and final day of #Crustmas my true love gave to me the fossil Rosagammarus minichiellus McMenamin et al 2013 from the Triassic Luning Formation in Nevada. This particular fossil has had an interesting path of reinterpretation. Buckle up!

The Lepidoptera of Costa Rica are so amazing.

Visited by a very seasonally appropriate moth this week…

A December Moth (Poecilocampa populi) #InvertFest

Panacanthocaris is the weirdest of the weird. It's spiny carapace is very distinctive. Work in press by myself and colleagues shows that the genus Iliella is actually a senior subjective synonym of genus Panacanthocaris. Iliella was described first by Tchernyshev (1940), and the carapace was illustrated upside down. Panacanthocaris was described second by Novojilov (1957), and the carapace was illustrated right-side up. Oops. #invertfest #invertefest

Happy #feetfriday ! One of the most adorable things on the planet are lepidoptera prolegs, MANY insect tarsi and tarantula claws. Enjoy these prolegs from #atticusatlas moth larva!

Yes, they can inhabit humans. For the brave, you can find a video of one inhabiting a human eye on the interwebs. I like to imagine that the pentastomids inhabiting dinosaurs would have been massive. Where is our #paleoart of that? #invertfest #invertefest
