Special counsel Jack Smith has filed a new indictment against Donald Trump over his efforts to undo the 2020 presidential election. It keeps the same criminal charges but narrows the allegations against him following a Supreme Court opinion conferring broad immunity on former presidents. The new indictment removes a section of the indictment that dealt with Trump’s interactions with the Justice Department, an area for which the Supreme Court, in a 6-3 opinion, said Trump was entitled to immunity from prosecution. The stripped-down criminal case represents a first effort by prosecutors to comply with the Supreme Court opinion.

New obstruction of justice crimes have been lodged against Sen. Bob Menendez. The new charges were in a rewritten indictment returned against the Democrat on Tuesday in Manhattan federal court. New charges of conspiracy to obstruct justice and obstruction of justice were added against Menendez and his wife, Nadine. They enlarged an indictment that already says the couple conspired with three businessmen to accept bribes of gold bars, cash and a luxury car in return for the senator's help in projects pursued by the businessmen. Both have pleaded not guilty. One businessman pleaded guilty last week, agreeing to testify at trial against the other defendants.
