"The city of #Delhi, India, hit 43.4 C (110 F) Wednesday, the hottest May weather in the last two years. Yellow, orange and red warnings are in effect for the heat wave in various areas of northern India.

"The scorching heat drove power demand to a new record for the nation. The highest maximum temperature in the country last week was 114 degrees F (46 C) in Akola, Maharashtra.

" 'This is normally their hottest time of year, but the heat could be dangerous for the elderly and very young,' AccuWeather International Meteorologist Jason Nicholls said."

"New Delhi: Amid the heatwave across north India, Delhi's largest crematorium Nigambodh Ghat has witnessed a sudden surge in the number of bodies being brought for last rites, officials said. On average, 50 to 60 bodies used to reach Nigambodh Ghat daily, but the number has more than doubled in the last two days. According to the Nigambodh Ghat administration, as many as 90 bodies were brought to the crematorium on June 18 while on June 19, the number increased to 142 -- the second highest since the Covid period."

"The sizzling temperatures are also taking a toll on animals, putting them at risk of dehydration and heatstroke. Sitaram, an animal conservationist in the city of Bikaner in Rajasthan who goes by one name, said endangered #chinkaras — also known as #IndianGazelle — are facing a #WaterShortage."
