W3 Prompt #211: Wea’ve Written Weekly

Intro

Dear friends,

Welcome to our W3 Poetry Prompt, which goes live on Wednesdays at The Skeptic’s Kaddish.

You may click here for a fuller explanation of W3; but here’s the ‘tldr’ version:

Part I

The main ingredient of W3 is a weekly poem written by a Poet of the Week (PoW), which participants read before participating in the prompt.

Part II

The second ingredient is a writing guideline (or two) provided by the PoW. Guidelines may include, but are not limited to: word counts, poetic forms, inclusion of specific words, and use of particular poetic devices.

Part III

After five days, when the prompt closes, the PoW shall select one participant’s poem as the W3 prompt for the following week, and its author becomes the next PoW.

Simple enough, right?

Kindly note: All entries for the W3 poetry prompt must be the original work of the submitting author. AI-generated poetry is not permitted.

Okie dokie ~ Let’s do this thing!

I. The prompt poem:

‘Flood Tide’ by Srijita (Hope)

Ma, your love rages loud through all your loss. It does not whimper. It does not hesitate. How does your heart carry on knowing the softness it will miss? Your strength swells, a river in flood tide. Ma, your love rages loud through all your loss.

II. Hope’s prompt: Be the thing

Write a Dinggedicht: a poem that enters so deeply into a thing that the thing seems to speak for itself through image, texture, movement, and sensation alone.

Choose anything: an object, animal, plant, machine, weather pattern, body part, or natural phenomenon. Describe it from the inside out. Let its physical reality guide the poem: its weight, surface, rhythm, sounds, habits, decay, memory.

You may lean into the surreal. Let the thing dream, contradict itself, remember what it should not remember, or behave in ways that defy logic. But keep the poem grounded in the thing’s material presence. The strangeness should emerge naturally from the object itself, not feel imposed upon it.

Do not explain what the thing symbolizes. Let the thing be the meaning.

Guidelines

  • Stay rooted in concrete imagery and sensory detail
  • Avoid abstract explanation whenever possible
  • Surreal elements are welcome if they grow organically from the thing itself
  • Free verse or rhyme are both welcome
  • 10–20 lines

Tips

III. Submit: Click on ‘Mister Linky’ below

In order to participate and share a poem, open up this blog post, outside of the WordPress reader. At the bottom, just below these words, you will see a small rectangular graphic with the words ‘Mr Linky’. Click on that to submit.

Submissions are open for 5 days, until Monday, May 18, 10:00 AM (GMT+2)

Last week’s W3 poem

This week’s W3 prompt poem (above), composed by Hope, was written in response to last week’s W3 prompt poem, which Dawn wrote:

‘Breath of Life’ by Dawn Minott

New life begins in Aerocene Where gravity loosens its grip Humans unlearn the weight of stay No ownership, only orbit No engines, only breath Lungs, rivers, wings Everything inhales, exhales together There are no borders here Equity and equality quells The hands that clenched too tightly Nothing is taken Because nothing is kept Everything passed Warm, bright, alive Humans no longer extract, But at one with nature Maps dissolve Humanity move as shifting kinships Connecting as one breath History is a shed skin #Community #CreativeWriting #Description #Dinggedicht #Imagery #Poem #Poetry #Prompt #Senses #W3

the mouth on the horizon appears

the mouth on the horizon appears
to open wide as a yawn and full of fire

the highway appears to come
out of the mouth toward you
like a dawn long
and thin asphalt cigar

from behind the windshield of a car
the apparatus of an eye looks
up the highway into the blinding
brilliance in the mouth

sees the silhouette of you pull
its hind foot up off the asphalt
like it’d gained the weight
of a work boot sunk down
to the ankle in wet concrete

sees the silhouette set
it’s hind foot down on the asphalt
in front of it’s front foot

sees the silhouette turn thumb extended

the apparatus of the eye that sees you
transmits what it sees
into the wiring harness of a brain

the brain decides that you don’t appear
like an excuse it wants to hear

sends signals down arms into hands

the steering wheel’s turned slightly

and the car veers
into the farther lane and passes

you turn again toward the beginning

breath out of the mouth warms your face

the car appears to diminish
into the distance then melt
into the fire in the mouth

as the wide open mouth begins
to rise to float to drift
gradually up the sky
like a balloon filled with fire

#MissKittyPolitics I rarely am idly curious. When I'm curious, there's no dirt left. It's all bedrock politics in this room. #Politics and #images as simple as #non-violent #mockery are now excluded. Standard #political #research and #imagery is #censored. Back to you: Are human rights necessary?

there came a messenger once

there came a messenger once

in august it was
early september late in the afternoon

his horse
sweat lathered and panting he rode
through the archway to the front
doors the heavy oak doors to our priviledge

he brought instruction for besserer

charles’ armies had occupied
stuttgart it was pillaged and burned

ulm was taxed into destitution and submission

when others of his classmates
here had returned to their families while most
had left the university had left wittenberg to find
ripe crops in the fields to hire themselves out

besserer was instructed to remain
he was instructed to eat

idled into reading
he read himself into boredom

he was bored into a search
a finding of things to clean
things to repair things to paint

all through that season he laboured at
waiting for instruction to arrive
that he should return home to bernstadt

Reading some great doctoral candidate work on expression and imagery in piano performance by Jinjing Liu. It isn’t my role to share the tentative findings but I’m hopeful this’ll lead to a publication beyond the thesis (assuming as I am a positive examination outcome). She’s my supervisee, so bias in my evaluations is always an issue… one way or the other. I hope the examiners will like it as much as I do when it’s all been put together.

from denmark hamlet brought silver

from denmark hamlet brought silver
speciedalers and cronin

and so he paid to wear the black robe
and the recognition from the towns’ folk
that he was a student here

so he paid for admission
into these corridors of ignorance and revelation

admission to these classrooms
where both daydreams and fascinations were
brought to the table

for me he bought
memories of how he knelt
at his waking and at his bedtime prayers

memories of his voice when he sang hymns

but now sure as i knelt beside his dying
he’s long forgotten what he paid
for a chair

for a place among the gathered
in the assembly hall

his understandings
of german of latin
of philosophy of theology

his ability to speak
in all these languages to read

all these things he bought he left where

like all of us occupants temporary
his bed in the dormitory was rented
