@biodiversitypix From the painting by George Stubbs. This moose was brought to London in 1770, and the painting commissioned by the anatomist William Hunter. He kept the painting, which is now in the Hunterian Collections at the University of Glasgow, along with interesting archives relating to its origins.

#ThinSectionThursday In Archaean times, ultra-hot komatiite lavas were often erupted at Earth's surface. The hottest ones were much hotter than anything erupted today (maybe up to 1600oC). They often show fabulous "spinifex" textures with skeletal/dendritic crystals typical of very rapid growth, like this 2.7 billion year old one from Munro Township, Ontario. Field of view about 2mm wide. Specimen in the #Hunterian museum, University of Glasgow. See Alt-txt for more. 🀩 #Geology #Microscopy
@FaithfullJohn Now this is quite an image of odd minerals together! Unless you are a scientific whiz you’d never realize such a relationship can exist. Also I had no idea I may find rock people on Mastodon by looking at your new-to-me hashtags! #ThinSectionThursday #Mineralogy and of course you have shared so much via #Hunterian museum.
Calcite and perovskite may be battling it out in #minCup25 today, but they can be friends too. Here's an image of a layered rock with perovskite (dark brown) and clear blebs of calcitic carbonatite melt, and spiky crescumulate calcite crystals. This strange rock is from one of the Benfontein kimberlite sills in South Africa. Image is about 15mm wide. Sample is in the #Hunterian museum collections in Glasgow. #ThinSectionThursday #Geology #perovskite #Calcite #mineralogy

#MinCup24 Copper vs Perovskite - hard to choose a favourite today!πŸ€” Meanwhile, here's a very nice native copper specimen from the Carboniferous basalts of Boyleston Quarry, Barrhead. 🀩 This locality has produced t he finest Scottish copper specimens. This one is about 10 cm long, and in the #Hunterian collections at University of Glasgow... #Geology #Mineralogy
#ThinSectionThursday A beautifully zoned epidote crystal with an older brown allanite core in Lewisian gneiss from the summit of Dun I, the highest point on Iona. #MinCup23 #Arsenuranospathite vs #neptunite. Arsenuranospathite has a splendidly bonkers name, but I'm going for neptunite. The neptunite in this specimen in the #Hunterian museum collections, from San Benito, California, has a Ξ΄41K potassium isotope ratio of 0.21‰± 0.06. It's probably the only specimen of neptunite on Earth for which the potassium isotope ratio is known 😊 πŸ€“ See https://pubs.rsc.org/en/content/articlelanding/2018/ja/c7ja00257b #Geology #Mineral #Isotopes
@silicatefondue @jolyon This specimen of #sapphirine with phlogopite from Fiskenaesset, Greenland was given by Giesecke himself to the Scottish mineralogist and collector, Thomas Brown (1774-1853). His collections are mostly in the #Hunterian museum, University of Glasgow. https://www.gla.ac.uk/collections/#/details?irn=20699&catType=C&referrer=/results&q=sapphirine
