All these products being all "This bottle contains recycled plastic" like, mate, at this point we *all* contain recycled plastic, please be more precise.

It was obvious from the outset that predictive policing was a scam (not to mention a vehicle for accelerating overpolicing), but it's really valuable to have this careful reporting of just bad it is:

NOTE: I quoted a report from an executive of DuckDuckGo attending the antitrust lawsuit against Google. This article has now been retracted from Wired:

"After careful review of the op-ed, "How Google Alters Search Queries to Get at Your Wallet," and relevant material provided to us following its publication, WIRED editorial leadership has determined that the story does not meet our editorial standards. It has been removed."

I hope we'll learn more about what Google actually does, since September 28, the court established a process allowing the Justice Department to publish more information about this case.

A Note From WIRED Leadership

Differential erosion on a red sandstone mask on the Trustees Savings Bank in Springburn.

The lines across this scultpture are created by layers of different composition and hardness within the 270 million year old sandstone, which means they weather at different rates. In this case, the effect is quite striking.

If you are teaching an undergrad software engineering course this semester (or next, or the one after that), please have your students read the McKinsey article on measuring developer productivity, critique it, and then give them @tastapod's critique for comparison: https://dannorth.net/mckinsey-review/
McKinsey Developer Productivity Review

McKinsey recently published an article claiming they can measure developer productivity. This has provoked something of a backlash from some prominent software people, but I have not seen anyone engage with the content of the article itself, so I thought this would be useful. I am writing this as though the authors have approached me for a technical review of their article. You can think of it as an open letter.

Chicago-based designer Nicholas Rougeux is fascinated by early encyclopedic publications, and most recently, he took an interest in ornithologist John Gould’s 'A Monograph of the Trochilidæ, or Family of Humming-Birds," restoring hundreds of the 19th-century illustrations.

“Blocked” by Westminster: Scottish Rural Visa Scheme

Last year the Scottish Government developed a scheme which would support local businesses, especially in rural and island communities, by easing the migration process for those wishing to work in these locations in Scotland. But what has happened to the Scottish Rural Visa Scheme? The Proposal for a Scottish Rural Visa Scheme is modelled on the successful Canadian Atlantic Immigration Program but as this area is a…
