Books that would have made this year's best novel shortlist much better.

The Ferryman by Justin Cronin
Yumi and the Nightmare Painter by Brandon Sanderson
House of Gold by C.T. Rwizi
Stand Alone by John Van Stry

My Hugo best novel votes this year.

1 - Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh
2 - No Award
3 - Starter Villain by John Scalzi (not bad, just not a worthy finalist)
4 - Witch King by Martha Wells (lots of unexplained features)
5 - The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty (the book purposefully hid information from the reader)
6 - Saint of Bright Doors by Vajra Chandrasekera (plain DNF - boring)
7 - End of ballot

Translation State by Ann Leckie (Hard DNF)

Attached: 1 image Doing this in reverse order of the announcements on the night, because you were going to scroll straight to the best novel anyway weren't you? Relatively uninteresting compared to some others: "Some Desperate Glory" starts out in first and stays there. A good start for "The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi" but it's just not getting the transfers from other books as they're eliminated. Mostly an SF/Fantasy split I think, but surprised by the number of Witch King transfers to Translation State

OK, here we go: Visualising the #Worldcon #Hugo2024 voting results.

Alternative Title: Why ranked voting matters.

As a quick explanation, the last placed candidate in each round is eliminated and their votes transferred to the next candidate on each ballot.

This is the first place ballot only, the second place is calculated by treating the winner as eliminated and rerunning the election. I have not included the final round runoff against "No Award" as this year that's all uninteresting.

Unformed Hugo thoughts... Of the Nominees I've only read 'Some Desperate Glory', 'Starter Villain' and 'Translation State'. Of the 3 I would have picked Translation State as a winner but I guess that's coloured by how much I like the overall series and Ann Leckie as a writer. I enjoyed the winner but I felt it was maybe more suited to the YA Category.. Looking forward to reading the rest - 'Witch King' next up on my list.

Someone told me that there would be a bunch of people hoping to take a Hugo home this weekend, but I haven't even had a single offer. Most disappointed.

I really enjoyed "Better Living through Algorithms," the @naomikritzer short story Hugo Winner (must specify that as she also won a Hugo in the novelette category!) https://clarkesworldmagazine.com/kritzer_05_23/ #Hugo2024

I've completed my reading of the entries in the Best Novel category for this year's Hugo Awards.

Drum roll please.

1. Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh - go read this book. Now.
2. No Award
3. Starter Villain by John Scalzi - lightweight and fun reading. Just not one of the six best genre books of 2023.
4. Witch King by Martha Wells - good book. Not one of the six best.
