Remember When Some New Yorkers Lost Their Minds After NYC Lost Amazon HQ2? - Hell Gate

One developer called it "the worst day for NYC since 9-11."

@anildash Remind me, again, how many public dollars did cities and states around the US throw at #Amazon in the form of tax breaks, public subsidies and other giveaways — a.k.a. economic #incentives (😂 ) — to win #HQ2 (money that could probably... possibly... definitely have been spent in better fashion, BTW, to boost #equity and economic development)?

Maybe it’s for the best that #Baltimore lost out on #HQ2… The last thing we need is another Port Covington… err I mean Baltimore Peninsula. With the tax breaks Hogan was offering to Amazon all of us in the state of #Maryland would have effectively become Jeff Bezos’ serfs in perpetuity. Thanks, #Virginia for bending over backwards to make this happen.

The risk of an economic downturn is, in fact, precisely one of the reasons it's a bad idea to throw billions at a big corporation for some vague, non-binding promises of job creation. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-03-03/amazon-hq2-pauses-construction-amid-layoffs-remote-work#xj4y7vzkg

Amazon Pauses Construction on Second Headquarters in Virginia as It Cuts Jobs

Amazon.com Inc. is pausing construction on its sprawling second headquarters near Washington, a decision that coincides with the company’s deepest ever job cuts and a reassessment of office needs to account for remote work.

This is interesting in light of the HQ2/NYC saga: Amazon threatened not to move into Ranier Square if Seattle passed a business tax intended to help build low-income housing and the homeless.

The city backed down. Now Amazon is...not moving in to Ranier Square.

Are we still telling ourselves HQ2 was anything but con?

#Atlanta was among the cities in the running for #Amazon #HQ2. One potential factor in the decision – as David Pendered wrote in February – was the city’s relative scarcity of college-educated #millennials
