Frank Zappa closing the '60s with some exquisite avant-garde jazz fusion in 'Hot Rats'. 🐀🎸💿 (10 October 1969)
Frank Zappa's second solo album, 'Hot Rats', is an ideal entry point for those who prefer less satire in their music or find Zappa's later eccentric, surreal works difficult to digest. Predominantly instrumental, with the exception of one track featuring Captain Beefheart on vocals, the album allows listeners to focus on Zappa's remarkable improvisational guitar work, which is highly impressive, despite him not yet reaching his artistic peak at the time of the album's release. Supported by an exceptional group of session musicians, the album delivers a blend of avant-garde jazz fusion and is easily one of Zappa's finest works. Whilst 'Over-Nite Sensation' is often recommended as the quintessential introduction to Zappa's '70s sound, 'Hot Rats' stands as an equally compelling starting point, and one of the most intricate albums to close out the 1960s.
