Out of jail, is the CRISPR-baby scandal scientist at it again? - ABC Radio National

Chinese scientist Dr Jiankui He flouted the law and bioethics basics to create the world's first CRISPR gene edited babies. Now out of jail, he's back on Twitter recruiting patients and raising funds for more trials, this time in adults not embryos. A dangerous distraction or a cautionary lesson for the world's scientists?  Dr Joy Zhang has an extraordinary insider view after a recent encounter. Dr Katie Hasson is part of a global Coalition to Stop Designer Babies. They join Natasha Mitchell on Science Friction.

ABC Radio National

"Why CRISPR babies are still too risky — embryo studies highlight challenges: While society grapples with the social and ethical implications of heritable genome editing, technical obstacles still abound."

Unpredictable deletions and insertions, loss of large parts of chromosomes are some of the errors researchers have observed. While they say research should continue, it's currently very unsafe to use these methods medically.

Today's post is about the Human Gene Editing Summit in London which I attended from afar, just some notes #HGEsummit https://blogs.nottingham.ac.uk/makingsciencepublic/2023/03/10/human-genome-editing-summit-london-2023/
Human genome editing summit, London, 2023 - Making Science Public

Ceci n’est pas un blog post. As I have no time to write anything proper for a few weeks, these are just some notes and pointers. This non-post is ‘about’ the Third International Summit on Human Genome Editing which took place at The Francis Crick Institute in London from 6 to 8 March. I couldn’t ...

Making Science Public

Kind of frustrated with the type of discussion on the regulation of human genome editing. As Turner notes, a comparative legal approach is not very instructive.

What would be more interesting is a better sense of what clinics and hospitals are actually doing, services advertised, and reporting on any complaints.

That's perhaps beyond the ken of the Human Gene Editing Summits... But it would be nice to see discussions move beyond ethics & guidelines.

The opportunities for clinics to expand commerce and increase profits by using "gene therapy" as hype is real.

Prof Turner did not provide examples of gene editing bz but says if its done in low reg environments there will be real harms. Serious injuries, fatal outcomes, the exploitation of the vulnerable, patient deception and fraud, and damage to credibility of medicine and science.

Scientific presentations at #HGESummit on use of CRISPR for double-strand breaks (and as base editor) in embryo research, however, shows that we are a VERY long way from using this safely in germline applications. A range of unwanted on-target and off-target effects.

Really excellent talk on the sci and tech of editing human embryos from Dagan Wells at todya's Royal Society summit!

Early human embryos are genetically unstable. CRISPR creates double stranded DNA breaks, only 9% are repaired homologously, 51% repaired w indel mutations.

But 40% lead to unresolved breaks: 2/3 don't dev, 1/3 do w potentially severe genetic abnormalities.

In toto: CRISPR editing of embryos is only about 30% successful.

Forget designer babies. Here’s how CRISPR is really changing lives

The gene-editing tool is being tested in people, and the first treatment could be approved this year.

Royal Society Int'l Summit on Human Genome Editing

Incoherent talk about the WHO Guidelines on Genome Editing. Goal very fuzzy.

Had to look at the actual report to understand what was included. The most concrete recommendations are the creation of a gene Tx clinical trial registry and a (fuure) confidential
reporting mx for possibly illegal, unregistered, unethical and unsafe human genome editing activities.

Wait, Jaime Metzl is on the WHO Expert Committee on Human Genome Editing?

That seems a bit odd...

He's been very vocal about pushing more coverage for the lab leak origin of Covid.

He's testifying tomorrow at House Subcommittee on Oversight, with Robert Redfield and Nicholas Wade.
