🔹 The Price of "Free": Who Owns Our Digital Fate? 🔹 💡 “There has to be some way that the fate of the user becomes the fate of the platform.” – Jaron Lanier Today, in my Urban Economics class at the Faculty of Economics, University of the Basque Country, I found myself repeating a fundamental truth: "If something is free, you are the product." I did intentionally surveyed students social media preferences: Instagram, TikTok, genuinely the most penetrated platforms....followed by far by an insignificant X, Mastodon, BlueSky. Facebook? What is that? This is not just a critique of surveillance capitalism—it is a profound urban, economic, and political question. Cities, like digital platforms, risk becoming infrastructures of extraction, where citizens are monetized, their agency diminished, and their data repurposed for unseen interests. The asymmetry between users and platforms mirrors the asymmetry between citizens and algorithmic governance. But what if, instead, the fate of the user truly shaped the fate of the platform? What if data commons, digital sovereignty, and participatory AI governance redefined the economic contract between citizens and technology?
