“Pflanzen, die an seltsamen Stellen wachsen” / Plants in strange places

The Javits Center in NY is well-known as a sprawling site for events like New York Comic Con, but perhaps fewer people know it has a 7-acre green roof made of sedum (or stonecrop) plants, with an orchard and rooftop farm, that’s also a wildlife sanctuary for over 70 species of birds. Seen here through one of the dotted bird-safe glass panels used all over the building.

Cooling green roofs seemed like an impossible dream for Brazil's favelas. Not true!

Cheap, lightweight hydroponics systems that use material recycled from plastic bottles reduce the “heat island” effect and can be installed on just about any kind of structure - even those that could never support the weight of a conventional green roof.
