#ORNL: Frontier Usersโ€™ #Exascale #Climate Emulator Nominated for #GordonBell #Climate Prize
A multi-institutional team of researchers led by #KAUST in Saudi Arabia, has been nominated for the Association for Computing Machineryโ€™s 2024 Gordon Bell Prize for Climate Modelling. The team developed an exascale climate emulator with radically enhanced resolution but without the computational expense and data storage requirements of state-of-the-art climate models.

@bruces There was a fair amount of notice on fediverse, tho the #gordonbell hashtag only shows a few toots, there was a solid week or so of mentions. People tend to be bad about hashtaggingโ€ฆ

The No Output Division, a management frustration memo written some forty years ago by a senior VP at a then-huge-now-gone IT entity:

โ€œI believe 1/2 of these people could be let go from DEC today and our productivity would take a sharp rise.โ€

I think thereโ€™s a bit of context that makes Recall a bit easier to understand.

The recent death of Gordon Bell -- a computer pioneer who spent many of his last days at MS -- reminded me of his "lifelog" project. He wore a device that would photograph his surroundings periodically, and save it away in an archive. It took snapshots of his PC activity, as well. He abandoned it about a decade ago because it was a big clerical task.

Enter AI.

I can't help but suspect *that's* what they were thinking.

A lot of the chatter about MS's Recall has had an element of "What were they thinking?"

Rest in Peace old mate. C. Gordon Bell was a pioneer in Computer Scalability. He took the notion of #Clustering from its infancy to productization. All Computer Architects have stood on his shoulders over the past decades. #Scalability #Clusters #DEC.
An #AmericanTreasure in the #Engineering domain. #GordonBell.

C. Gordon Bell, Creator of a Personal Computer Prototype, Dies at 89

It cost $18,000 when it was introduced in 1965, but it bridged the world between room-size mainframes and the modern desktop.

RIP.

"Computer pioneer Gordon Bell, who as an early employee of Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) played a key role in the development of several influential minicomputer systems and also co-founded the first major computer museum, passed away on Friday, according to Bell Labs veteran John Mashey. Mashey announced Bell's passing in a social media post on Tuesday morning."
