Een woonerf met een gracht rond dat ontstond in het centrum van Denderleeuw in de 10e eeuw, is bepalend geweest voor het dorpsuitzicht tot diep in de 19e eeuw. Dat blijkt uit onderzoek van archeologen, vlak bij de kerk. "Het leert ons iets over hoe de dorpen in het zuiden van Oost-Vlaanderen er vroeger uitzagen. Het waren clusters, en niet de aaneengesloten bebouwing die we nu kennen."
