I gave a talk on #franzBoas a couple weeks ago - the hegemony-smashing #antiracist founder of American #anthropology, who swam upstream during the leadup to WW2 (and got pushed out of his job at #ColumbiaUniversity for it - good job Columbia!).

So close to being ready to share it online! Stay tuned!

I gave a talk on campus this week on Franz Boas. (I'll share it here when the recording's ready.) It was moving to see how people resonated. In a time of Nazis, eugenics and lynchings, Boas was vocally antiracist, worked with POC, got pushed out of his job for his views (nice going Columbia U!) and became the founder of American #anthropology.

People were thirsty for this. We're thirsty for these stories. We aren't alone. Courage is possible and effective. Become a problem.

Charles King: Schule der Rebellen. Wie ein Kreis verwegener Anthropologen Race, Sex und Gender erfand

Latest EAZ paper! We present the final article in the series about Franz Boas's legacy. This article critically examines Franz Boas's anti-racist stance, revealing inconsistencies in his engagements with Afro-Americans and Native Americans. Focusing on Boas's collecting practices, the paper argues that despite his significant contributions, Boas's work was marked by epistemic and structural violence.
