The eruption of Bárðarbunga produced a lava field of more than 85 km² (33 mi²) area and 1.4 km³ (0.34 mi³) volume, the largest in Iceland since 1783.
We were lucky to be on a flight over the site in a Twin Otter plane from Akureyri in the north. I'll never forget the moment we first saw the curtain eruption - I realised I was holding my breath.
