Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery in Poperinge, Flanders, is the prime witness of more than four years of violent warfare. From 1915 until 1920, the hamlet of Lijssenthoek became the venue for the biggest evacuation hospital in the Ypres Salient.

Two weeks in #belgium🇧🇪 were over too some summers ago and so was my photographic #journey into some facts and parts of #worldwar1. Not only was #inflandersfields created at this place, indeed the youngest fallen hero is buried here: #vjstrudwick is told to have fallen at the age of 15 - unbelievable and sad! 😢 Lest we forget all those who gave their utter sacrifice for freedom - true heroes they were!

In other countries (especially Belgium, France or the UK) the Great War is clearly more present than the Second World War. In German history, both wars are the proof for the downfall of mankind but - perceived - the cruelties of WW2 are dominating here in Germany due to our ashaming historical legacy and millions of inexpressible crimes against humanity.

Apart from that, when walking through Hamburg-Rahlstedt, I found this memorial to the fallen heroes of World War I by coincidence, getting the proof that the utter sacrifice of brave men of all nations (and German soldiers) in the first World War hasn't been forgotten as well.

This May 3rd marked the 110th anniversary of the day Lt. Colonel John #McCrae wrote his famous poem #InFlandersFields during the Second Battle of Ypres while mourning the loss of his friend Lt. Alexis Helmer.

John McCrae, MD (1872–1918), being a physician and a soldier, wrote this moving poem which still shows the feelings and emotions soldiers had to deal with in these days: „In Flanders Fields“, a piece of wonderful art created in the horrible setting of The Great War on May 3rd, 1915 - 109 years ago.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣

The site of Bayernwald, in Flanders known as “#Croonaertbos” was part of the German front line during WWI, known as the “#Wijtschateboge” and “#Ypernboge”. It was conquered by the Bavarian Army of Crown Prince Rupprecht von Bayern in 1914.

Not many places on this planet are as peaceful as the "Pool of Peace" aka. #LoneTreeCrater aka. the #Spanbroekmolenkrater near Ypres, despite its origin in The Great War. Being there twice, it's astonishing to feel how much a man can calm down when sitting here. Nature has done a magnificent job of healing the scar of war.

Having a depth of twelve meters and spreading 129 meters, it's the biggest crater reminding of the atrocities of the First World War.
