Rewinding my lifeline back to July 2021, I (once again) visited Belgium and especially the region of Flanders where my interest in Flanders Fields was born years ago.

Hill 60 was a low rise south-east of Ypres made from the soil removed in digging a cutting for the Ypres to Comines railway.

It is told to had excellent views over both Ypres and Zillebeke, and was captured by the German army during the first Battle of Ypres in November 1914. On 17 April 1915, in one of the first tunnelling operations by the British Army, six mines exploded under Hill 60, which was then quickly captured with minimal casualties.

"In Flanders Fields, the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

... We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields."

(John McCrae, written on May 3, 1915)

Not many places on this planet are as peaceful as the "Pool of Peace" aka. #LoneTreeCrater aka. the #Spanbroekmolenkrater near Ypres, despite its origin in The Great War. Being there twice, it's astonishing to feel how much a man can calm down when sitting here. Nature has done a magnificent job of healing the scar of war.

Having a depth of twelve meters and spreading 129 meters, it's the biggest crater reminding of the atrocities of the First World War.

No one can prepare you for the impact Tyne Cot Cemetery has on a human mind of today, being not aware of the terrors and fears that came with The Great War. 11,965 burials, of which 8,369 are unnamed, mark the Belgian landscape while fields of crops and wheat embrace this monumental site.⁣

Hold your breath and try to walk humbly over this burial ground once you made it to this region in Belgium - and try to learn from history!

Lest we forget.

“They didn’t burn witches, they burned women” - A visit to the gravesites of the women (and few men) who were unjustly persecuted and executed during the Salem Witch Trials in Salem, Massachusetts, USA, circa 1692-1693. A mar on American history in the sea of cruel treatment of women that occurred worldwide from the 15th to 18th centuries where the world of patriarchy and misogyny was used to control women, torturing and murdering those who didn’t comply or questioned commonly accepted gender roles. A time that feels we are still recovering from, that we’re still seeking the release from the silent oppression of, that we’re dangerously close to recreating in modern day society.

Let’s not forget where we’ve been so we can better guide next steps of where we want to go! 🫶🏼
