Fire management in the red tingle forest of southwest Australia has been a hot topic for a few years now. New research from @natesanderson.bsky.social suggests that the red tingle forest should be managed differently than the nearby Karri forest, to reduce tree mortality.

New study proves our ancestors were fire-wielding climate shapers 50,000 years ago. Makes you wonder what they'd think of our current "controlled burns" situation... 🔥

Turns out humans have been environmental game-changers since the ice age - we just scaled up!

Carbon Record Reveals Evidence of Extensive Human Fire Use 50,000 Years Ago - Slashdot

"It has long been unclear when humans started using fire," writes Phys.org... To address this question, researchers from the Institute of Oceanology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS), alongside collaborators from China, Germany, and France, analyzed the pyrogenic carbon record in a 300,00...

📖 In an paper published in History of Science, Inês Gomes and Frederico Ágoas examine ‘the intersection of environmental history and the history of science, specifically the impact of forestry science and fire management on land use and community dynamics in rural Portuguese mountains’.

Heli-hydrant water tanks speed helicopter responses to California wildfires

Retired firefighter Mark Whaling knows firsthand what it’s like to wait on a helicopter to refill on water while he's battling a blaze on the ground. Before retiring from the Los Angeles County Fire Department, he worked to develop the Heli-Hydrant – a small, open tank that can be located in urban areas to give helicopters a much closer water source than when they have to fly to natural sources such as lakes and rivers. The Heli-Hydrants are drawing interest from officials eager to boost their preparedness for wildfires, especially in the West. One was used nearly 40 times last fall in a fire near San Diego.

Canada’s fire forecast looks bad. The impacts could spill across the border into the US

It could be another dangerously smoky summer for some in the United States as Canada prepares for a busy wildfire season with forecasts also signaling extreme heat is in store for both countries in the coming months.

On the heels of a dry winter, firefighters around the US brace for wildfire risks

From the southwestern U.S. to Minnesota, Iowa and even parts of New Jersey, it was a dismal winter. Many communities marked record dryness between December and the end of February. Snowpack was nearly nonexistent in some spots and vegetation was left tinder dry. All comprise ingredients for elevated wildfire risk. More than 1,000 firefighters and fire managers recently participated in an annual wildfire academy in Arizona, where training covered everything from air operations to cutting back brush and building fire lines. Academy officials say there's a consensus that crews will be busy throughout the spring and summer.

Let’s be frank,

… most of these fires is a user failure:
Rough usage handling or misuse; overcharging or overloading of power boards/plugs; incompatible chargers; etc.

Responsible users shouldn’t be penalised, and Lithium demonised, because we have idiots that can’t read user manuals carefully.

Incompatible lithium-ion battery chargers increase fire risk, firefighters warn

Firefighters are urging people not to mix and match their lithium-ion battery chargers due to the increasing risk of a fire or explosion. There are concerns the risk of battery fires will increase as devices using lithium-ion become more popular.
