Lots of, spicy, Feditralia commentary on the idea of a royal commission. Very enlightening to read through some of it.

"In an open letter to #PrimeMinister #AnthonyAlbanese, 17 families of the dead and wounded called for a #federalinquiry known as a #royalcommission to investigate a rise in #antisemitism in #Australia since the #Israel-#Hamas war began in 2023 and consequent security agency failures..."

"Instead, he announced the terms of an inquiry by retired bureaucrat #DennisRichardson that would examine potential failings in procedures and laws that led to the shooting, which was allegedly inspired by the #IslamicState group. That inquiry will report in April next year."

Families of Sydney massacre victims demand more federal action on antisemitism and security failures

Families of victims of the recent Sydney massacre are urging more federal action to investigate rising antisemitism and security failures. Two gunmen killed 15 people and wounded 40 others at a Jewish festival on Bondi Beach on December 14. On Monday, 17 families called for a federal inquiry known as a royal commission to investigate antisemitism in Australia since the Israel-Hamas war began in 2023. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has resisted these calls, opting for an inquiry by a retired bureaucrat. The New South Wales state government has promised a royal commission. Security is being tightened for New Year’s Eve celebrations in Sydney.
