The Best Paper Award Committee was chaired this year by Suresh Venkatasubramanian and included eight Area Chairs: William Agnew, Sebastian Benthall, Toon Calders, Shion Guha, Kate Kaye, Samir Passi, and Hilde Weerts. Committee members were assigned nominated papers to review and score, following checks for conflict of interest.

"This article describes, analyses and evaluates the AI-based targeting systems โLavenderโ, โGospelโ and 'Where's daddy?', which the Israel Defense Forces (#IDF) have been using in Gaza since 2023. We specifically address the question of where the masses of civilian casualties could come from, even though the systems in question are said to use state-of-the-art AI components to enable 'targeted killings' of #Hamas fighters in a legal manner. We join expertise from the areas of computer science, science and technology studies (STS) and international humanitarian law (#IHL). [โฆ] This article contributes to both, the body of research on AI in warfare as well as to the body of evidence regarding violations of international law."

At the first #FAccT2026 keynote and really appreciate that the screen has the speaker, the slides, an ASL interpreter, and closed captioning. We've come a long way.
