Doomwatch – TV Series (1970-1972)

Doomwatch was a British sci-fi TV series which ran between 1970 and 1972. It was created by Gerry Davis and Kit Pedler, who were both well known for their work on Dr. Who. 38 episodes were made over the course of three series, but only 24 survived, and one episode has never been broadcast. Glad I'm not the only one running late. I've had a weirdly productive day but I'm not intending to make a habit of it.

I was thinking today about the '70s BBC series #Doomwatch, and wondering if anyone else here attributes their fears for the planet to Kit Pedlar, Simon Oates and co.

The Countdown to Doomwatch is Over!

From virulent plastic-eating viruses to computer data collection/profiling nightmares, and from Intelligent, human flesh-eating rats to American age-discrimination business management practices, come join the fun and watch as Doomwatch watches the world unravel.

Doomwatch was a British science fiction TV series (1970–1972) about a secretive government team that investigated the unintended and often terrifying consequences of advanced science and technology on the environment and society. The stories focused on (then) contemporary issues such as pollution, genetic engineering, and industrial malpractice. While often very dated in its societal attitudes, time has shown to to be often almost prescient in its warnings for the future.

Although many episodes of Doomwatch were destroyed by the great BBC videotape purge of the 1970s, from 2011 to 2020, Fusion Patrol reviewed all extant episodes and movies.

While the audio wasn’t always the best on our original episodes, they’re been restored to bring out the best quality we can from the limited-quality masters, and now have their own podcast feed. Looking Forward to 2026?

I’m doing something a little different this week.

I’m working on the restorations of our Doomwatch review episodes, and I’m not ready to release the audio versions of them, but, I’m been experimenting with Auphonics ability to generate audiograms as I restore these episodes, so i thought I’d plop them out on the Fusion Patrol Classics YouTube channel.

Why now? Well, although Doomwatch was next in line anyway, it occured to me that Doomwatch is one of the most confusing series we’ve ever done. It is so badly dated in places, especially when it comes to attitudes about sexual harassment, that it can be cringe to watch.

At the same time, this ancient program brought up so many issues with regards to science and technology that are still 100% relevant today. You watch these episodes and ask yourself, “How did we know all this back in the 70s, and yet still here were are?”

So, in honor of the start of a new year where we are still on a doom watch of the world, I decided to push all 26 episodes of our podcast covering Doomwatch out onto YouTube. Starting earlier today, I’m releasing 1 per hour until tomorrow evening.

Do yourself a favor, find Doomwatch at watch it (but beware the cringe) and marvel and laugh at what they got wrong, and what they got so damn right.
