I was slightly annoyed with some bollocks lesson scheduling this afternoon, so I nipped into the secondhand shop behind Berlitz beforehand, and scooped up another mint condition Passport album. This period with Christian Schultze on keys and Curt Cress on drums is dynamite German fusion, and Doldinger sounds amazing as ever on sax.
Had to hang out in town during a long day of classes, so I visited the secondhand record shop in the street behind the Berlitz centre and picked up this total bargain. Double-album of the first two Passport albums. 1976 issue in mint condition.
The first of these features a few members of Amon Düül II and is absolute nosebleed German fusion. Very chuffed at this find.

Die neunzigminütige Dokumentation 'Klaus Doldinger - Eine deutsche Musikerlegende' (2006) von Ali Haurand und Elmar Sommer geht auf Spurensuche in Doldingers Leben. Mit Hilfe vieler Archivaufnahmen, O-Tönen von Weggefährten und jüngerer Arbeiten zeichnet die Dokumentation den Werdegang von Klaus Doldinger nach. Dabei spielt seine Laufbahn als aktiver Jazzmusiker und Gründer verschiedener Formationen genauso eine Rolle wie seine Arbeit als Komponist für Film- und Fernsehmusik und sein Leben als Privatperson.

2001 hatte ich das Vergnügen die Formation Old Friends feat. Klaus Doldinger, Albert Mangelsdorff, Eberhard Weber, Wolfgang Dauner, Manfred Schoof, Ralf Hübner in Ingolstadt anläßlich des Ingolstädter Jazzfestivals live zu sehen.

Klaus Doldinger galt als Deutschlands "König des Jazz". Als Komponist der "Tatort"-Titelmelodie und der Filmmusik von "Das Boot" oder "Die unendliche Geschichte" verewigte er sich bei einem Millionenpublikum. Nun ist er im Alter von 89 Jahren gestorben.
